WALL MOSAIC
Commissioned by Priory School, Slough (Part of the Creative Partnerships initiative)
Design inspiration: the Romans
Age: 7-8 years
Time: 2 days workshops + 2 days finishing + installation
Materials: classic roman mosaic materials including marble and other natural stone, glazed ceramic tile, glass nuggets, pebbles and other accents.
The aim of the mosaic project was to consolidate the recent learning of the children. The subject matter was the Romans and the children were encouraged to recap on what they had studied and then to draw elements for the design.
Tamara, head artist of MOSAIC ART, put together the overall design from the delightful children's drawings: a Roman Piazza with two Roman figures meeting in the middle with their amphora and fruit baskets. The piazza is surrounded by classic Roman temples and buildings and guarded by a centurion. In the background, Mount Vesuvius is erupting.
The mosaic was created by the children during the two days of workshops and the marine ply, on which the mosaic was mounted, was then fixed to the wall at the entrance to the school.
