Wall Mosaic
Design inspiration: a fantasy wall with storybook characters
to encourage story-telling in the playground
Age: 3-6 years
Time: 1 week workshops + 4 days installation and painting
The school, like many other, had a lot of wall space just waiting for improvement and brightening up and together we selected the end wall of the playground as the location for a mosaic mural of a fantasy world.
During the design session, the children were encouraged to focus on their imagination and think about fairy tale and fantasy creatures which they might want to include. The aim was not to focus on existing creatures from films or books, rather to come up with their own generic versions. Some firm favourites were soon established: a princess, a dragon, a knight, a wizard etc. They each produced a drawing of their favourite thing and MOSAIC ART put together the overall design: a group of forest friends listening to a story in a forest clearing.
During the workshop, the children learnt about materials and mosaic skills and helped to make the main elements out of mosaic. As they were so young, only adults did the cutting and it was a great help that the school had organised to have at least 1 parent helper at each session. These elements formed the central part of the mural and the background scene was painted around them: trees , flowers and grasses to make a clearing in the forest next to rolling hills in a far-away land.
The mosaic has not only created a fabulous backdrop to the playground, it is also used as a teaching aid in summer to encourage story-telling and imaginative activities and has much encouraged parent participation.
