Storytelling benches
Design Inspiration: the U.N. Convention for Children's Rights
The aim of this project was to create a gathering space and outside story-telling space near to an old oak tree. Participants had varying special needs including physical disabilities through the autistic spectrum to behavioural problems.
As part of their on-going work on rights and responsibilities, the children considered things that were important to themselves and to someone in another country e.g. Africa. They also drew different leaves to incorporate the tree. Their drawings were used to put together the overall design for the benches.
All the children in the school took part. The mosaic was installed on the bench bases and was officially inaugurated on "Tree Day".
*Heathfield School is one of the first schools in the U.K. to be recognised by UNICEF as a "Rights Respecting School".
Time:5 days of workshops + 4 days of preparation / installation
