THE NEW PUPIL REFERRAL UNIT, (Phase 1) (2008)
Exerior Wall Mosaic - "WHAAM!" (size: 3.5mx3.8m
Commissioned and funded by Hampshire County Council
AGE: 12-16
Andover's Pupil Referral Unit moved to a new accommodation in 2008, providing more space and new facilities for vulnerable young people who for various reasons are not in full time education. The aim has already been achieved of reducing permanent exclusion from local schools to zero, and further progress is hoped for by following a policy of inclusion, and by personalising the curriculum for individual students.

This project was developed with the idea of putting some of the young people's artwork onto the blank walls to provide both character and familiarity, as well as to inspire other young people attending the centre.

Expanding on the theme of "Popart" which was already on the agenda, drawings were produced by different groups. The overall design was put together by Tamara Froud and Mike Baker.

Workshops to create the mosaic were set up during a summer week of activities where young people learnt to use the tools, how to create a mosaic and most importantly to work together on a common piece of artwork for their space.

The mosaic was installed by MOSAIC ART on a corner wall in the new centre, which was opened by County Councillor David Kirk, Executive Member for Children's Services, who said:
"This is a high quality operation, and it was clear to me that the students responded to, and respected investment in better provision. I enjoyed watching the new mural being installed on one of the outside walls, and hope the students will be able to provide material for the walls and corridors inside."
TIME: design day, overall design and preparation, 1 week of workshops, 2 days installation
